Pro Plant Tips for Care

Red Jewel is quite hardy and will be a low maintenance tree for your yard.

Red Jewel can handle a wide range of soil types from clay to sandy loam – as long as the site drains well. Choose a location with well-drained soil. If you need to improve drainage, add additional native soil in a mound 18 to 24 inches high. You’ll plant directly in that mound.

The tree prefers a full sun location, but will tolerate a partial sun location. Always favor the locations with the earliest and most morning sun as this is the drying sun.

Give your tree a moderate amount of regular water. This way, your tree stays healthy and stress free. Remember, it’s usually stressed plants that have issues in the landscape.

Happy, healthy trees – just like people – can generally shrub off any concern. Our Red Jewels show disease resistance to fire blight, rust, and apple scab.

Although this variety stays small and narrow, if you need to prune to correct any branching, get out there early in the year. It’s best to prune dormant Red Jewel Crabapples in late winter or early spring before they start to put forth their new spring growth.
