Fox Sedge (Carex vulpinoidea) is one of those rare plants that will grow as well in Florida as it does in New Hampshire, Arizona, Washington or Arkansas. As a matter of fact, it is native to most of the contiguous United States. It even grows into southern Canada.
You know what that means? It means that we are pretty positive that Fox Sedge will grow where you live! This super hardy sedge is a robust little perennial (often an evergreen) and a workhorse in the garden.
The foliage is a lovely spring-green. In June the little grass-like tufts are topped with 5″ inflorescences that darken to a deep brown and resembles the tails of foxes jumping through a meadow.
You won’t find a better plant to help out in disturbed garden areas, too. They are often used in Wetland Restoration and Erosion Control. They excel in drainage ditches and mitigation sites.
