Pro Plant Tips for Care

Water your Wonderblue Lilac regularly, but do not overwater. It requires good soil drainage, so if you see puddles that remain long after a rainfall, mound up when planting. Bring additional soil in and heap it up 18 high. You’ll plant directly in that mound.

It loves sun, sun, sun! Wonderblue can take a place in all day sun. However, it will tolerate a few hours of afternoon shade and still flower. Flower production is best in a planting site that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.

Morning sun is best for drying the leaves. Wonderblue’s foliage does show improved resistance to powdery mildew, but why take chances?

Air circulation is also important for Lilacs to perform at their best. When planting, please avoid low spots or heavily enclosed locations that trap airflow. Far better to find a place where the breezes can blow all the way through the branches.

Fertilize in early spring and again in mid-summer with Dr. Earth Organic and All Purpose Fertilizer, following directions on the package.

Give your plants an annual layer of mulch. It’s best to completely cover the root system with a 3 inch mulch layer. Spread it out to 3 to 4 feet from the center of the plant. As a final step, be sure to pull the mulch away from the main stems by at least 2 inches to give it air circulation.

You can easily maintain Wonderblue Lilac to any size. It will flower on old wood, so get out there just as soon as the flowers fade. Don’t wait any longer, or You’ll risk missing out on next year’s blooms.

To rejuvenate older plants, you can take out several of the oldest, thickest stems by cutting them off at ground level. This will promote new growth from the base of the plant, which will flower beautifully for you.
