Clematis Vyvyan Pennell bears huge 8″ double flowers in the spring and reblooms in August with single light violet flowers; one of the best double flowered clematis variety.
The impressive flowers are violet-blue with reddish overtones and have contrasting gold stamens. It was awarded Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
This is a good strong grower, compact and sturdy, and produces lots of large, luxuriant flowers on strong stiff stalks!
Clematis \’Vyvyan Pennell’ needs a supporting structure to grow properly and it is easy to grow with a rich, porous, alkaline soil that has plenty of room for the roots to spread. Prune lightly above the new leaf buds in early spring and remove any dead or weak stems.
Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, but will thrive and bloom in shade. Apply generous mulch or a shallow-rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established: they take a season or two.
