Most wet sites in gardens – places like the edges of ponds (or even in ponds!), drainage areas, low spots in the garden, runoff swales, or the spot by the A/C condensation drip – cause big problems for most perennials. The roots will actually rot in standing water.
Now, if you want to plant a small perennial plant that does well in wet conditions, we have got the perfect plant for you! Variegated Sweet Flag (Acorus gramineus \’Variegatus’) will thrive in wet spots that other plants won’t – even completely submerged at the edge of a pond, fountain or pool. On top of this they also tolerated a wide variety of light conditions from full sun to light shade.
The grass-like foliage is apple-green striped with yellow which gives it wonderful color, especially in low-light areas. This is a fast-growing semi-evergreen that will quickly give you a lush garden bed with lots of movement. (It grows fast enough that you will want to make sure that you divide it every couple of years to keep it at its prime. )
Variegated Sweet Flag looks great in any garden, whether you use it as a border or a bedding plant, but looks especially good in an Asian, Zen or Contemporary design. These are good container plants, too. They pair well with Coral Bells, Sweetspire and Iris.
Grow Variegated Sweet Flag for its pretty color and soft texture but love it for its tough constitution!
