Easy, Native Edible Evergreen Hedge

If you want to grow blueberries in your landscape, You’ll want to consider this unique, compact pollinator partner for bigger yields. Ever tried huckleberry pancakes? They are delicious!

Scarlet Ovation Evergreen Huckleberry (Vacciunium ovatum \’VacSid1\’) is a seriously cute, little native evergreen shrub. Developed in British Columbia, it features several neat tricks.

First, it’s a native plant that will bring butterflies and birds to your yard.

In spring, the new foliage develops as a beautiful, bronze red which deepens into glossy green as it matures. This color show happens even in partial shade.

Next, the rounded and compact growth habit makes this a wonderful choice for low hedges. It’s a classy edible replacement option for the edging plants in your front yard landscaping. Trim it for more formal look, or let it go “wild” (it won’t get rangy on you. )

Showy white flowers develop in spring and become showy dark blue huckleberries in August. It’s delightful to watch the transformation, beautiful to look at, and the berries have a complex taste reminiscent of blueberries, but with a bit more “tang”, in a good way.

With this plant, there’s no muss and no fuss. It’s nearly maintenance free. You’ll enjoy the berries, if the birds will let you get to them. You’ll feel like a real wilderness trouper with these cooked into your pancakes.

You can also grow it in containers on your patio or flanking your front door. The rounded habit will look lush and full for you all year round. Just make sure the pots have excellent drainage (add more drainage holes if you need to. )

We’ll have a hard time keeping this interesting – and beautiful – variety in stock, so please
