Not Your Every Day Evergreen

Fetterbush – Rainbow, Leucothoe fontanesiana \’Rainbow’, is a graceful, arching evergreen. Fetterbush thrives well along the banks of creeks or massed in front of shrub borders. Sometimes it is called Dog Hobble.

Rainbow is a slow grower and does best when planted in generous drifts. The fragrant white flowers appear in spring, and it has deep green leaves, mottled pink and cream, on striking red stems.

It is a natural companion plant to Rhododendron, because this Leucothoe thrives in acid soil and full to partial shade, but will tolerate sun if soil is not dry.

No pruning is necessary unless it is to shape it up; established plants can benefit from fertilization. Rainbow makes a very nice and colorful addition to the garden.

Select a site that is not windswept, and shaded to some degree; makes a good undergrowth plants that can hide “leggy” plants behind them.
