Garden Plant: Radius Astilbe
Product Description: Radius Astilbe
Red Plumes From Red Foliage
Astilbe Radius, Astilbe \’Radius’, is an outstanding new hybrid that starts showing off in the spring when the foliage emerges dark-red, and then matures to dark-green.
Astilbe \’Radius’ blooms profusely in mid-summer when the dark-red flowers buds open to deep rose-red plumes that butterflies and hummingbirds love. \’Radius’ blooms are slightly fragrant and makes a great cut flower.
\’Radius’ is perfect for lifting shady areas. Deadheading will not increase blooms, so leave the dried seed heads to provide late season interest. Cut back hard in spring.
Astilbes are long-lived perennials that are most comfortable when grown in rich soil and light shade to filtered sun. They will grow in full shade, but will not bloom as prolifically there.
Though they are easy to grow, Astilbes have one critical requirement–lots of water. Plants must have consistently moist soil; dryness leads to a quick demise, especially in the sun.
Fertilize Astilbes in late spring before flowering starts. Wait to cut back the old foliage until spring; it will help protect the plant from winter damage. They are deer and rabbit resistant.
