It was hybridized in 1935 by the brilliant French horticulturist, Francis Melliand who saw the invasion of France as an inevitable possibility. He desperately sent cutting to friends in different parts of the world to try to secure its future.
The Peace’ Rose was finally named and introduced in the United States on April 29, 1945, on the very same day that Berlin fell. This momentous day was the turning point when the terrible World War II finally began to come to a close. Peace won AARS accolade honors in 1946 and the same day the peace treaty was signed with Japan.
The Peace Rose has a very special place in the world, and it’s time hasn’t passed or tarnished into a vintage memory. Not by a long shot.

How to Use Peace Rose in the Landscape
Create a special spot for this outstanding feature plant. You might imagine this as a living sculpture, but it’s not a hothouse plant. Peace is actually quite vigorous and robust.
The large, leathery leaves and outstanding blooms on these tall shrubs will make a definite impact in your landscape. Keep it classic with a low, clipped Boxwood hedge, or plant several of them as a fabulous hedge.

Pro Plant Tips for Care
Give Peace plenty of room so that all parts of the plant receive plenty of sunlight and good air circulation. Give them at least 5 to 6 feet on center, measuring from center of one to the center of the next.
These are sun lovers. Give them at least 8 hours or direct sunlight preferably morning sun.
Roses require a well-drained location but are adapted to a wide range of soil types. In poor draining locations, plant in a raised bed or mounds at least 12 to 18 inches high. Mulch to 3 to 4 inches deep but pull back the mulch all the way around the stems themselves. Never let mulch rest directly against the stems.
Fertilize your Peace Rose using a general-purpose fertilizer like Dr. Earth Life Organic and Natural All-Purpose Fertilizer in the early spring and mid-summer.
Aphids are the most common pest with Roses. Watch for them and use a jet of water to wash them off.
While the Peace Rose has good disease resistance, You’ll want to watch for moisture related fungus and mildew related problems. Most of these concerns can be easily avoided by planting in locations that receive early morning sun.
You’ll want to follow a schedule every 7 – 14 days during the growing season. Spray the top and bottom of all foliage with Bonide Bon-Neem Fungicide Miticide Insecticide RTU Spray Oil in late afternoon once the setting sun has lost most of its heat. You’ll polish the foliage and protect it at the same time. Call it Me-Time communing with your lovely plants.
Prune your Peace Rose in late fall with a goal of opening up the interior of the plant so it can receive air and sunlight. Plant them with plenty of space on all sides and avoid low-lying areas that can trap air. Bag and remove your pruned stems and remove leaf litter from under your Roses.
Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. It’s best to use ground soaker hoses or drip irrigation, if you can. If you must use overhead sprinklers, time them to go off at sunrise so that the drying power of the morning sun can quickly dry the foliage.
