The Haden Mango (Mangifera indica \’Haden’) is self-fruitful, and the resulting beautiful fruit color is most definitely part of the appeal. A bright red over a bright apricot-yellow skin with hints of orange make this a most attractive fruit. The fruit grows 4 to 6 inches in length and can weight up to 24 ounces. The skin of the fruit is thick and tough.
But it is the wonderful flesh of the Haden that is the real prize. A bright yellowish-orange color that is both beautiful and inviting. One bite into the juicy rich flesh with its syrupy sweet flavor will convince anyone of the value of this exceptional variety of Mango. When ripe the flesh is smooth with some fiber towards the pit.
The Mango tree is a sub-tropical tree that requires a frost-free climate to thrive. Young trees are particularly sensitive to the cold and can die from sustained colds below 30 degrees. Protection for young trees should be a part of your plan when growing them in zone 9 and 10.
The Mango is a beautiful evergreen tree with long narrow leaves and an open rounded canopy that is often used as a focal point in the tropical garden. As a screen or a small evergreen shade tree the Haden has tremendous edible landscape value. The clusters of small white to pink blooms cover the tree in the spring and the wonderful multi-colored fruit finishes up the season in the late summer. All accounting for one dynamic landscape presentation.
Plant the Haden Mango in a full sun location in soils that drain exceptionally well. If poor drainage is suspected plant on a mound that is at least 18-inch-high or in a raised bed that it 12 to 18 inches high and 3-foot square. The mound or raised bed should be filled with native soil to ensure that the root will acclimate quickly to its new home.
Mangos make a great container plant but need a large pot to be successful. Mango does great planted in the biggest pot you can provide because the water requirements are directed at growing on the dry side allowing the soil to dry out somewhat between watering.
Mangos are adapted to a wide range of soils that includes rocky sandy and clay soils. The trees is drought tolerant once established which is well suited to the tree that needs to be grown on the dry side. This is very important prior to flowering. Often it is recommended to decrease the trees water at least 2 months before flowering. Then resume regular watering after fruit set.
Mangos are heavy feeders and benefit from being fed at least 3 times a year with a well-balanced organic fertilizer. Dr. Earths Organic and Natural All-Purpose Fertilizer will do the trick. Apply once in Spring, Summer and Fall for the best results. The fall feeding will help to make the plant a bit more cold tolerant. Mulch the tree to 3 to 4 inches deep to 3 feet outside the canopy, to help keep this surfaced rooted plant roots cool in the summer and to cut down on surface evaporation that will extend the time between watering.
