If you want an elegant evergreen shrub to provide year round interest and structure in your landscape design, take a good look at adding Green Mountain Boxwood (Buxus x \’Green Mountain’) to your landscape.

Green Mountain Pyramidal Boxwood has handsome foliage with reliable green color. The small, dark-green leaves hold their color well against the winter winds.

With a distinct pyramidal shape, it will develop into a wonderfully upright, vertical accent in your yard. This unusual form is a standout feature and is quite unlike many of its Boxwood cousin varieties which tend to develop rounded and spreading growth forms.

At the nursery, we believe this natural upright habit makes Green Mountain the ideal candidate to train and shear into a thick and dense formal pyramidal form. It takes years of expert care to propagate a cutting, transplant, pot up and trim year after year to make a #3 container plant.

How big are they? Well, it takes upwards of 5 years before we can plant them into a #3 container. And once they reach that size, they’ll put on a good amount of new growth each spring. Green Mountain has become one of the best-selling upright forms because they grow so nicely for our customers.

During those 5 years, our expert growers are taking great care of them. Each year, we give the plants a light trim. Our goal is to leave them a bit fluffy, but still help them maintain their nice, upright form.

Please know that when you receive #3 container plants of Green Mountain Boxwood, they might be as old as 7 or 8 years old already! They have received expert care and attention all those years.

Now, if you purchase a #5 container, please also know that it takes another 2 years to grow them to that finished size. No wonder the price goes up as the container size increases! You are buying an older, more established plant. And our #5 containers get shifted into their pots and grown another 2 years or so to get them to the finished size. That’s an investment of nearly a decade of care on our part.

Pro Plant Tips for Care

When you get your Green Mountain Boxwood, plant them before trimming them. That way, You’ll be able to make them match if you are using them in formal or symmetrical planting.

Or, you may want to leave your plants a bit more natural and prune them less formally to be used as an upright screen or accent. However, you decide you want to maintain your Green Mountain Boxwood is up to you. We will have all of the hard work and time put in the plants when you receive them.

This plant maintains its shape with a once-a-year pruning after the first flush of new growth. Plan to prune by late spring or early summer, especially in cold climates. Prune earlier in the season so the plant has a chance to harden off before winter to reduce the chance of winter burn.

Late in the summer, it may produce another lighter growth spurt. It’s fine to clip off any wayward growth but use a light hand later in the Green Mountain Boxwood growing season.

They really require little time on your part to keep your plants looking good. And even less time if you allow them to grow naturally.
