Marvin Ellis bought a pecan grove in Georgia in 1944. In 1978 his son, Elliot Ellis, helped him open a retail market and gift store on the property and talked him into going into the mail order business. In 2018 Elliot and his sons patented their own pecan tree and have made it available to home gardeners everywhere.
And we are so glad they did!
The Ellis Pecan is a big, sturdy, impressive tree that not only makes an impact from its sheer heft and profile, but literally gives you bushels of delectable nuts every growing season.
Ellis will grow anywhere from 75 to 100 feet tall. This doesn’t happen overnight, mind you, so you can grow it in your suburban backyard and know that it will be a generation before it towers that big over your house. But it doesn’t have to be fully grown to produce its bevy of nuts. It starts producing very young, especially for a pecan tree, and it produces a lot – 43 nuts per pound on average. Think about that when You’re weighing your next pecan purchase at the neighborhood market.
