How to Use Chinese Snowball Viburnum in the Landscape

Carve out private areas in your landscape using several of these planted in a short hedge. For a solid screen in a hurry, plant them 3 – 4 feet apart on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next plant.

If you have a bit more time on your hands, or want a looser, less dense hedge, just increase the spacing to 5 – 6 feet apart. Again, You’ll measure between the center of each plant.

Why not create a Secret Garden using several as living walls of green leaves? You’ll love the look in spring as they’ll be wallpapered with those super showy spring blooms. Imagine the dinner parties in a private outdoor dining area, or cozy conversation area.

Even though the flowers are the real show, once they are gone the dense, rounded shrub is a bushy background filler that will make your summer flowering plants really pop.

Line the north side of your pool deck with this easy care, living privacy fence. It’s a perfect backdrop for container gardens filled with tropical treats or breezy Ornamental Grasses.

Chinese Snowball Viburnum grows to a larger size in the southern regions of its growing region. In mild winters, the plants may be evergreen or semi-evergreen and hold on to their leaves in winter. In these areas, these plants make nice sized screening plants and excellent hedges.

Stagger a double row of these across the back of your mixed border to tie the whole design together. Or, use them as a really beautiful way to extend the height of your hardscaped fence.

In their northern limits of their hardiness zones, the plants will stay a bit smaller, but don’t worry! The flower production is not reduced at all. Massive flower displays on this plant makes it highly desirable for individual specimen plants, or excellent shorter hedges.

Pro Plant Tips for Care

These beautiful shrubs require well drained soil for best performance. If you see puddles that last and last after a rainfall in your preferred planting area, try mounding up. Add 18 – 24 inches of soil in a mound or raised bed, then plant directly into the mound.

Pruning Chinese Snowball Viburnum is easy. Once a year as soon as the flowering is done, give it a quick trim to remove the dead wood and shape it up.

Be sure to prune after the blooms are done, so you don’t sacrifice any of those beautiful flowers. Every 3 – 5 years, rejuvenate the shrub by removing the oldest, fattest stems all the way down to the ground. This allows the younger, thinner stems in to produce the very best blooms.

Do not confuse this warmer region Chinese Snowball Viburnums with the colder region European Snowball Viburnum (Viburnum opulus Roseum’) which is used in the colder hardiness zones.

Because this is a sterile Chinese Snowball Viburnum, you won’t have the fruit that Viburnums usually produce. The flowers are unscented, so won’t compete with other fragrant plants that bloom around the same time. Because they are sterile, the plants do not make any fruits or seeds.

Enjoy this wonderful plant! The sooner you order, the sooner You’ll get started making memories for yourself, family and friends.
