Luther Burbank, the master plant breeder, loved the Burbank Plum (Prunus salicina). He considered it his prized variety and named it in honor of himself in 1897. For home gardeners, this variety produces fruit with a reddish skin, deep, orange-yellow flesh and a very distinct rich, sweet flavor.
Burbank Plum maintains firm flesh that has a great crunchy texture throughout the ripening period.
Burbank is a natural semi-dwarf tree, with a graceful form that thrives across wide range of climates from Zones 5-9. Even though as a semi-dwarf, it won’t take up a lot of space in your yard, you can always hold it at any height with minimal summer pruning.
Plant it in well-drained soil and full sun. Morning sun with its drying power is best!
The Burbank produces a fantastic plum. A mid-season ripener, it is a wonderful pollination partner with Santa Rosa, Methley and Burgundy plum trees from us.
As an added convenience, the fruit hangs on the tree for a long time and continues to improve in flavor. This plum is a semi-freestone, which means it partially separates from the pit.
You simply can’t go wrong with the unique taste of Burbank Plums. Luther Burbank used this variety in many of his hybrid interspecific fruit tree crosses, so it’s also a historical fruit tree. We highly recommend this wonderful Plum tree.
