Tiarella \’Sugar and Spice’ (PP#16,738), is the result of extensive breeding efforts at Terra Nova Nurseries, and perhaps the best Tiarella ever! The dramatic, lacy leaves are adorned with heavily marked dark centers and have a shiny appearance that almost appears to be lacquered.
In spring, a profusion of lightly fragrant, bottlebrush flowers are displayed for a very long time. The flowers of Tiarella \’Sugar and Spice’ are white with a unique pink frosting.
\’Sugar and Spice’ will do best in full shade and needs average to moist soil. Try planting this popular perennial with Lamium \’White Nancy’, Hosta \’Patriot’ or \’Japanese Painted Fern’ for contrasting color.
To create a more neat appearing plant, remove the old foliage before new leaves emerge. The plant clumps can be divided every 2 or 3 years in the spring.
It can be planted as a groundcover or mingled with other shade loving plants. Other popular used for this plant are container plantings, in borders, and as a cut flower. Foamflowers are close cousins to the Coral Bells, with similar sprays of flowers over a low clump of foliage.
