Fortnight Lilies (Dietes bicolor) have dainty flowers that look almost like butterflies hovering over the strappy leaves. But don’t let that daintiness fool you. These are one of the toughest and easiest plants to grow in your zone 8-10 garden.
They look exotic and almost tropical, but they can withstand inland heat and even an occasional hard frost. This is a great all-purpose plant to use in your sunny beds and borders. It is green year round and covered with flowers all summer.
The flowers are a pale shade of buttercream yellow and are highlighted by dark maroon blotches. They are pretty during the day, but positively glow in the evening when many other garden flowers are fading in the darkness.
Fortnight Lilies are drought resistant and are used throughout the Southwest in dry gardens, but they also love being by streams and ponds, too. They take the desert heat and the coastal cool with equal stride. Water to establish them, and then they are very drought tolerant once established.
