This is truly a cause for celebration! Celebration Blanket Flower (Gaillardia x grandiflora \’Celebration’ Plant Patent #26,969) is a little plant with a big impact!
Gaillardia are known for pumping out lots of flowers, but Celebration takes that to a new level. From spring or early summer all the way through the first frost these little guys are covered in red-orange (more red than orange) 1-2 inch wide daisy-like flowers. The hot color saturates the petals (and even the cone!) and it doesn’t fade in the heat of summer. You have the same rich color in June as you do in August!
Celebration grows about 14″ tall and wide and if you plant several together you will get the true “blanket” effect. This is a fantastic groundcover for those bright sunny spots in your garden. The plants are reliably perennial. They die to the ground in the coldest part of winter but come back faithfully every year getting better and better. No pruning or deadheading necessary! They keep their shape and keep on blooming. On top of all this they are nice on the water bill, requiring much less water than other plants that flower as much as Celebration does!
Try them in beds and borders for sure, but they also are fantastic in containers. They make great cut flowers, too!
