Variegated Japanese Forest Grass, Hakonechloa macra \’Fubuki,\’ is an ornamental Blue Oat Grass that is attractive as a single accent plant in a very small garden, or it can be massed in groups for a beautiful fine-textured drift.
It produces drooping clusters of pale blue flowers on arching stems from May to August; seed pods ripen to medium brown. The blades turn a light brown in the fall.
\’Fubuki’ prefers a full sun exposure and will tolerate light shade. Plant it in moist soil that is well drained, but it will tolerate sandy, as well as heavy clay soils.
This small plant adds a burst of color and texture in rock gardens, along the front of borders, or along a walkway. \’Fubuki’ has thin blue leaves that are half inch wide and taper to a fine point. It has good drought tolerance, once established and does well in containers.
