The Copper Shouldered Oval Sedge (Carex bicknellii) sways in the breeze and brings a welcome sense of motion to your landscape. This variety was named “bicknelli” in honor of the 20th-century botanist Eugene Pintard Bicknell, who dedicated quite a bit of time to studying native plant species. Because of this, you may hear this plant being referred to as “Bicknell’s Sedge” from time to time.
This exciting plant produces long, narrow leaves that grow upright and flourish outward form its center, like most other sedges. Its foliage ranges from brown to tan to green, and new spring growth is vibrantly green.
Once summer rolls around, the Copper Shouldered Oval Sedge demonstrates why it’s “copper shouldered. ” Oval seed heads shoot from its middle with a warm coppery color. The flowers tower over the base of the sedge and add a lot of additional visual interest to the garden.
