We first spotted this striking plant a few years ago when grasses and their brethren started becoming all the rage. It was in what we can only describe as a “chocolate garden”. All of the plants were in shades of tawny tans, rich browns and golden ambers. Who would have thought a garden in shades of brown would look anything other than dead? But not only was this garden full of life and movement, it was…and we don’t use this word lightly…breathtaking. It was remarkably beautiful, and we are thrilled to be able to finally offer this little beauty to you!
Carex Cappuccino (Carex tenuiculmis \’Cappuccino’) is small in stature but makes a big impact. The russet reddish-brown foliage looks great all season. The color adds depth to deep greens and pops beside perennials. It is a standout in a grass border and makes a huge impression when massed. It even looks awesome when covered in frost in the dead of winter!
Like all sedges, Carex Cappuccino is ok with wet feet, so try it next to a pond or in those low wet spots every garden seems to have. It is a perfect plant to fill on those \’over-splash’ areas by fountains or downspouts, too.
