The foliage is a small, loose ball of lacy, fern-like leaves that are a striking bronze-green. They emerge from the ground each spring and their bronzy color means that they can take the sun better than other astilbes. In early summer, spikes of raspberry-purple flowers shoot up out of the center of the plant. The spikes have hundreds of tiny flowers that open up in succession, so you get colorful blooms over a long summer season because new flowers open as old flowers fade. The flowers make excellent cuts for bouquets, both fresh and dried.
Astilbe is one of the classic shade garden plants. It is stunning in big drifts in a dappled shade border or try it under big shade trees where other plants might struggle. It is a natural for woodland gardens and makes a perfect groundcover in the shade of a north-facing wall.
