Love the marvelously sophisticated blooms of delicate Lacecap Hydrangeas? Well, how about a reblooming variety that produces flowers from spring through fall?
Decorate your landscape with Endless Summer Twist-n-Shout Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla \’PIIHM-i’). You’ll love everything about it, but especially the way the light, lacy flowers seem to dance on top of the deep, quilted, green foliage. Look closer to see bright red stems, a knockout addition to cut flower arrangements.
You’ve no doubt heard about Endless Summer reblooming plants. They are true improvements on the old standards.
Twist-n-Shout was the world’s first reblooming Lacecap variety. It blooms early in the season on old wood from last year. Then, the blooms keep coming on new wood, or growth shoots from the roots this season.
You’ll adore using these pretty, compact shrubs in your landscape. They prefer to be in partial shade, which is a blessing. It can be challenging to find plants that thrive in that type of light condition. Twist-n-Shout adds a very elegant look to spots in afternoon shade.
Lacecap Hydrangeas are much more subtle than their Mophead cousins. Their lovely flower structures are borne in flat-topped clusters. Sterile florets are arranged in a charming little circle around the smaller fertile, pollen bearing florets. The blooms look like precious little Fairy rings.
But don’t let the delicate blooms fool you! These tough plants are cold hardy to Zone 4 and heat tolerant to Zone 9.
The official name of this beautiful Hydrangea is Twist-n-Shout, but you may see it spelled the Twist and Shout Hydrangea or the Twist and Shout Hydrangea. No matter, it’s still a perfect stand-alone specimen plant, or in combination with other plants in your landscape. The compact, rounded form also makes it easy to use as Thrillers in large outdoor containers.
Twist-n-Shout flowers all summer long. The gorgeous blossoms can be colored pink or periwinkle blue, depending upon your soil type. In higher soil pH, the flower color is pink. In acidic soils, the color is periwinkle blue.
This giving shrub doesn’t quit at summer’s end, either. You’ll enjoy a show all year with fall color and winter interest.
In cool fall seasons, the leaves can mellow into that deep, delicious shade of burgundy-red to celebrate the change of seasons. Leave the last flush of flowers to dry on the plant for a pretty winter display that catches frost and sculpts light snowfall.
This beautiful specimen is a truly stunning improvement on the classic Lacecap Hydrangea. Decorate the lightly shady spots throughout your landscape this year. Order a Twist-n-Shout Hydrangea today!
How to Use Endless Summer Twist-n-Shout Hydrangea in the Landscape
This versatile shrub is pretty enough to be the perfect specimen. It starts flowering right after the spring bulbs are finishing up for the year. There is always something happening with this plant, so use it where it can be seen and enjoyed.
They’ll be wonderful foundation plants for eastern exposures or in areas where there is protection from the hot afternoon sun. Rugged enough for high-end commercial plantings, Twist-n-Shout performs beautifully to grab attention in a sophisticated way.
Use them in a mass planting in partial shade. Plant them 2 ½ feet on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. Use a zig-zagging, or staggered planting plan to fill wide areas with season-long blooming and lush green foliage.
Twist-n-Shout is a great candidate for an excellent addition to your container groupings on your front porch or back patio. Use them as spectacular Thrillers in the center of large pots. Or, employ several as Fillers in those enormous containers you see these days.
Can’t you just imagine those little Fairy flowers in your Cottage Garden? Add some cunning garden accessories for a charming display. Don’t forget a small, rustic table and chairs for kids to host tea parties!
Add them near the front of mixed shrub borders, on the shady side of a cutting garden and even dispersed throughout your perennial border, too. You’ll appreciate the blooms from late spring all the way through fall.
The blooms make very modern cut flower arrangements. Add the red stems and dark green leaves as a wonderful contrasting foil to any bouquet.
Twist-n-Shout Hydrangea also makes a great low hedge. It typically gets a bit taller in warmer climates, and stays shorter in the colder regions. Plant 2 ½ feet apart in a long, meandering ribbon at the edge of the woods or along your patio.
Use it anywhere that gets morning sun and afternoon shade. You’ll easily create a fantastic, easy-care focal point all for the cost of a few shrubs.
Pro Plant Tips for Care
The best place for this Hydrangea is on the east side of a home or a taller tree. Give it a place that receives some shade from the hot afternoon sun for best results.
They love a nice, evenly moist, rich soil that drains well. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Be sure to add a thick layer of mulch over the root system to help maintain moisture.
Plan to do a light pruning just as the weather warms and the plants start to grow. Remove the old flower heads down into the body of the plant. Leave the overall shape somewhat rounded. After that, it’s quite hand’s off as the new flowers are produced on the branch tips.
Be patient with this pretty plant. Twist-n-Shout starts growing just a bit later in spring than some other shrubs. You’ll need to wait until the soil has warmed up. It’s so worth it!
Enchant yourself and your guests with the lovely blooms of Twist-n-Shout Hydrangea.
